vivre var. of guivre. This is cognate with the Eng. wyvern, and in OF was sometime known as woëvre/vouivre. In the medieval bestiaries, the vivre was depicted in three ways: 1. a human being with a tail; 2. a snake; 3. a two legged monster with a serpent's body and tail, and the wings of a dragon (the heraldic wyvern). The third of these was the most common. [FRENCHGLOSSAR]
