Genêt

genêt broom (bot). The plant adopted as a badge by the Plantagenets, and from which they derived their name ("Planta genista"). The common broom in England is cytisus scoparius, but the broom also appears in the genus genista; it is thus likely that the dynastic name was derived from such a plant. However, the naming of plants was of course not formalised at this time. [FRENCHGLOSSAR]
