cotices potencées et contre-potencées cotises potent counter potent. Used especially in the arms of Champagne and the derivative communal arms of the region. "The Champagne cotices were at some time, probably in the thirteenth century, made of, or represented as though made of, gold brocade, the 'custeces diaprez' of Walford's Roll. The pattern was, doubtless, of a simple geometric character, and after a few decades was stereotyped as the potent-counter-potent of the later blazons" (Asp II, pp164-6). v. also diapré.
