chape, chappe cope (ecc). The word is derived from the MedL cappa, the same root as chapé (qv). A long vestment made of a semi-circular piece of cloth, worn by the clergy during certain ceremonies. [FRENCHGLOSSAR]

Chape Voir Chappe. 1872 Sorte de vêtement qui s'agrafe au col et dont les côtés s'ouvrent à droite et à gauche. 1905 Sorte de grand et long manteau qui s'agrafe par devant, et dont l'officiant et certains officiers de choeur se revêtent à l'église.
